Proposal for Salford Meadows Bridge: Free Energy Working with Renaissance and Mecanoo International the submission titled ‘Free Energy’ captured the potential of the bridge to connect two worlds of profoundly different character: the urban realm on The Crescent which exudes a loud and visceral energy and the more subtle and soothing charm of The Meadows that it threatens to stifle. We proposed to harness the ‘free energy’ of the meander and express it by means of a landform and spiral that generates enough centrifugal force to ‘fling’ a bridge right across the river, like a lasso, capturing and taming the turmoil on the other side, slowly drawing it closer into the relative tranquility of its comforting presence.
