Barrow Borough Council commissioned XQLA in 2021 to plan and deliver public realm interventions which would revitalise Duke Street, the key historic civic street in the town centre. Funded through Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) investment.
The vision, shaped through stakeholder workshops with local business representatives and residents, envisioned a pedestrian-friendly, green and a civic corridor that seamlessly integrates cycle & bus provision whilst also providing a generous setting for important heritage structures, enhancing the character in the Conservation Area, and improving the liveability of this important street.
The first phase of the interventions has recently been completed. The suite of interventions includes pavement widening and new rain gardens with bespoke planters and seating as well as improvements to Cavendish Square.
