'Reclaiming the Road!' was the bold challenge set by the client, Alsager Town Board. With our trusted consultant team of transport, inclusivity and culture specialists we relished the clients’ aspiration and challenge for this popular Cheshire town to envision a complete step-change in the balance of their high street: A step change would see the demise of the car in favour of generous public space for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the renewal of the retail experience and leisure offer for the expanding resident and visitor population, focused on families. The proposals centre on the delivery of objectives set out in their recently adopted Neighbourhood Plan, and focus on designing bespoke and generous streetscapes which will enable the rich cultural activities associated with the town to occur, including a weekly artisan market, ‘Italian Day’ and Christmas fayres, as well as day retail and leisure activities offered by local businesses. Street greening, sustainable urban drainage and art interventions being integral to the strategy. Street greening, sustainable urban drainage and art interventions were also integral elements in the strategy.
Proposals will also deliver an enhanced sustainable movement network for the town ensuring linkage with adjacent residential neigbhourhoods and wider strategic cycling routeways.
