Working with Barrow Borough Council, and funded by Historic England’ High Street Heritage Action Zone funding, this area wide document seeks to support the design and delivery of high quality, place specific public realm investment across urban and rural locations. It is intended to be a baseline reference document for local authority officers, private individuals and developers alike, and as a mechanism to assess design quality in the development control process. Springing from site, observational study and background research the document firstly seeks to define different typologies of the Borough through the identification of specific ‘place drivers’. Good practice guidance and key principles are then provided for a range of grey, green and blue public realm components including placement, design, material and maintenance guidance as well as signposting to BS and Good Practice Standards. The document completes with a Designer’s Checklist and Glossary.
