XQLA were one of five teams led selected in this international design competition to transform the Cumbria coastal lagoon into a nationally significant visitor attraction. The Millom Town Deal Board joined forces with Colander Associates to launch a global contest to find the perfect design for the landscape. The team led by Bauman Lyons Archtects and includes Andy Edwards Design, MArtin Higgins Associates, Jane Simpson Associates, DP Squared and Experience Community. The concept was to:
Embrace what has been inherited:
Explore and utilise existing assets be they people, nature or physical elements. Treat nature as a partner:
By working with natural processes and focusing on ‘eco tones’; transitions between nature and people. Shape a distinctive offer:
Set an international exemplar of how access and enjoyment of natural landscapes can be fully democratised. Celebrate coastal impermanence:
By designing interventions which amplify the qualities of the site, in particular, the temporary nature of the coastline**. Be ‘System Shifting’:
Disrupt ‘norms’ and design things that move agendas forward. Create Co-benefits:
Aim to maximise the potential for inward investment by leveraging maximum benefits across economic, environmental, social and cultural themes of the Town Investment Plan
