The practice was appointed alongside Faulkner Browns Architects by Stonegate Developments in 2014 to provide the external and public realm proposals for the development of a landmark tall building (26 stories) on Rutherford Street in central Newcastle as well as townscape and visual impact services. The site is located at a Newcastle City Council defined ‘key gateway’ and adjacent to other core strategic developments including Science Central, City Gate and Gallowgate.
In conjunction with the planning consultant DPP and Faulkner Browns, XQLA designed robust, high quality and engaging thresholds between the building and wider streetscape. The people centred response, with pedestrianised thresholds and increased planting provisions, will significant public realm improvements to this key sustainable movement corridor.
The scheme has now achieved planning permission with delivery set for this year.
